Set in the 14th century, Princess Mononoke depicts a mystical battle between Animal Gods of the forest and humans during Japan’s Muromachi Period. Young Ashitaka receives a fatal infection after a demonic wild boar attacks his northern village. Seeking a cure, he sets out to locate the deer-like god Shishigami. Along the way, he sees the rape of the Earth by a mining village. The constant plundering by the village has brought the wrath of the Wolf God, Moro, who attacks the village along with San, a human who was raised by the wolf god. She communicates with the nature spirits, which is why she is called Princess Mononoke (“spirits of things”). Ashitaka wants these opposing forces to co-exist, and he hopes to bring peace between San and the ironworks owner, Lady Eboshi. However, he is thwarted as higher powers, intent on killing the Shishigama, intrude, and a battle erupts over the future of all nature.

The plot, which was as confusing as most of Wood’s scripts, seems to make it a sequel to Bride of the Monster and, to a lesser degree, Plan 9 From Outer Space, incorporating events and characters from both, including Paul Marco’s portrayal of the ubiquitous Officer Kelton. (Indeed, some Wood scholars have referred to the three movies as a group as “the Kelton trilogy,” since he is the only character to turn up essentially the same in all three films.) Duke Moore, who portrayed the detective lieutenant in Plan 9 From Outer Space, is back in this film, and now he seems to be identified as a specialist in bizarre and unusual cases, making him sort of Ed Wood’s distant precursor to The X Files’ agent Fox Mulder and The Night Stalker’s Carl Kolchak. This time there are strange goings-on, including disappearances and ghostly apparitions, at a mysterious house in a remote part of town. It turns out that this is the same house (rebuilt) and the same locale where Bela Lugosi’s mad scientist was creating zombies in Bride of the Monster, and that Tor Johnson’s Lobo is still there, somewhat the worse for wear. Instead of a mad scientist, however, the man behind the mayhem is a phony mystic named Dr. Acula, played by ex-cowboy actor Kenne Duncan. None of it makes too much sense, as though anyone needs to be told that, knowing that this was an Ed Wood movie, but parts of it are fun in that unique way that Wood’s movies can be — the strange word usages and dialogue patterns, as well as odd characterizations, mismatched shots, and incomprehensible plot elements all weave their eerie spell on the viewer willing to absorb them.

Glen or Glenda (1953) is an exploitation film written, directed by, and starring Ed Wood, and featuring Bela Lugosi and Wood’s then-girlfriend Dolores Fuller. In his heart-felt cinematic debut, Edward D. Wood, Jr. himself stars under the pseudonym Daniel Davis as a young man with a dilemma: should he tell his lovely young fiancee (played by real-life girlfriend Dolores Fuller) about his burning desire to cross-dress? She has begun to notice articles of clothing missing from her closet; the suspense builds…what should he do? Bela Lugosi plays the omniscient narrator; note his conviction as he “pulls the strings.” Amidst this unintentionally hilarious mish-mash of melodrama, social commentary and inexplicable stock footage, there is something for every taste: countless cross dressers, hallucinatory dream sequences, sex-change surgeries, spirited cat fights, borderline-pornographic simulated sex scenes, poetic monologues, a haunted house, and a stampede of wild buffalo. Released under various titles across the country — I Lived Two Lives, I Changed My Sex — this fiasco bombed across the board but managed to gain Wood enough notoriety in the “B”-movie world to launch a career that is today the stuff of legend.

So, I am hugely buoyed to announce a breath-taking shot across the bow from surfing’s most substantial commentator, Andrew Kidman, in his new film/book project, “Lost In The Ether.” In a surf cultural landscape trammeled by posers and sleight of hand illusionists, Kidman is still finding fresh and illuminating ground to explore. Who else would have thought to track down and ride the celebrated, stubby single fin a young Michael Peterson rode in Morning of the Earth, the vehicle responsible for THAT cutback? Who knew MP was only 18 and had been shaping for a year when he sculpted the landmark craft? Who else would have studied and measured and tried to replicate the thing, interviewed a remarkably lucid MP today about the subtleties of the craft, and reached conclusions that inform our understanding of surfboard design today? The endangered species of the devoted surfer/shaper is Kidman’s focus this time – Dave Parmenter, Michael Mackie, Terry Fitzgerald, Simon Anderson, Wayne Lynch. Kidman’s narration is sometimes a bit earnest, which is a shame because he’s a funny bugger, at his best when his witty self-deprecating streak shines through. And he shoots, edits and scores the whole thing himself, providing a moody soundtrack with his band the Windy Hills. Ground-breaking. – www.theinertia.com/

So begins an odyssey that will take the hatchling on a several thousand mile and decades-long migration, ending in its return as a giant adult to the very beach where it began life – completing a cycle that has endured for 100 million years. The modern world poses many threats to ancient sea turtles: poaching, entanglement in fishing gear, destruction of nesting sites, and pollution of the oceans. The greatest threat comes from the capture of sea turtles in shrimp nets. As the public’s taste for shrimp increases, so does the danger to sea turtles. Turtle excluder devices (TEDs), installed in shrimp nets, offer the simple solution. If the public demands “turtle-safe” shrimp the way they do “dolphin-safe” tuna, then the industry will be forced to use TEDs consistently.

An interesting hybrid of popular film genres, Ghost showcases the talents of its entire cast. While out on the town one evening, New York couple Sam (Swayze) and Molly (Moore) are confronted by a mugger. After submitting to his demands, Sam is murdered anyway. He then finds himself a disembodied spirit, invisible to the living world, wandering without hope until he finds a spiteful spirit aboard the subway (Vincent Schiavelli) who gives him some helpful pointers on how to co-exist. Soon Sam comes back into contact with those he knew in life, and he begins to learn piece-by-piece of his close friend and co-worker Carl’s (Tony Goldwyn) embezzling plot which caused his death; the apparent mugging was, in fact, a premeditated murder. In the meantime, Carl has designs on Molly, and Sam is determined to extract revenge. He contacts a psychic (Goldberg), and together, the two set out to serve justice and stop the maniacal Carl from getting to Molly. Blending comedy, romance, action, and horror, Ghost was a box-office smash and managed to garner five Academy Award nominations, including “Best Picture,” “Best Supporting Actress” (Goldberg), “Best Original Screenplay,” “Best Editing,” and “Best Score”; Goldberg won her first Oscar.

Gilliam adroitly applies his Monty Python sensibilities upon the “career” of famed German prevaricator Baron von Munchausen. Played herein by John Neville, the baron is seen quelling a war that he himself started, flying into the stratosphere on the back of a cannonball, ballooning to the moon, exploring the innards of a volcano, being swallowed by a whale….In short, all of Munchausen’s fabulous lies are here presented as “truth,” played out in full view of nonplussed witnesses Eric Idle, Charles McKeown, Jack Purvis, and Sarah Polley. Fringe benefits include several loving medium shots of jaybird-naked Uma Thurman as Boticelli’s Venus and an extended unbilled cameo by Robin Williams, that is, by the head of Robin Williams, as the King of the Moon. Filmed under considerable duress on a budget eventually exceeding 45 million dollars, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen never quite caught on with moviegoers, though it has enjoyed a lucrative afterlife on videocassette.

Adams’ oft-adapted tale of an normal guy making his way through the universe (it’s already been presented as a novel, a radio serial, a television series, and a comic book) finally makes its way to the big screen in this endearingly goofy sci-fi comedy. Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman) is a very ordinary man who is having a truly unusual day, after discovering that one of his best friends, Ford Prefect (Mos Def), is actually an alien, Ford tells him that the planet Earth is going to be destroyed so that otherworldly forces can make room for construction of a hyperspace bypass. Since Arthur accidentally saved Ford’s life years ago, Ford does him a favor, he first gets him a ride on a spaceship passing by, and then presents him with a guidebook that will tell a beginner everything he needs to know as he hitchhikes through outer space. Along the way, Arthur encounters such interstellar notables as sleazy Galaxy president Zaphod Beebelbrox (Sam Rockwell), the girl of his dreams Tricia McMillan (Zooey Deschanel), perpetually glum robot Marvin (voice of Alan Rickman), interplanetary construction magnate Slartibartfast (Bill Nighy), and cult leader Humma Kavula (John Malkovich). The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was the first feature film for Garth Jennings, previously best known for his work in television commercials and music videos; he was recommended to the producers by director Spike Jonze after Jonze had to turn down an offer to head up the project.

Conscious lyrics, earnest vocals (reminiscent of Garnett Silk) and straightforward roots music delivers the sweet sound of reggae. With his unique sound and a much anticipated live performance.
Godzilla (Gojira) (1954) is a Japanese Science fiction Kaiju film directed by Ishirō Honda. The film stars Akira Takarada, Momoko Kōchi, Akihiko Hirata and Takashi Shimura. One of the longest-running series in film history began with Ishiro Honda’s grim, black-and-white allegory for the devastation wrought on Japan by the atomic bomb. As his visual metaphor, Honda uses a 400-foot-tall mutant dinosaur called Gojira, awakened from the depths of the sea as a rampaging nuclear nightmare, complete with glowing dorsal fins and fiery, radioactive breath. Crushing ships, villages, and buildings in his wake, Gojira marches toward Tokyo, bringing all of the country’s worst nightmares back until an evil more terrible bomb — capable of sucking all the oxygen from the sea — returns the monster to its watery grave. The original film is chilling, despite some rather unconvincing man-in-a-suit special effects, and brimming with explicitly stated anti-American sentiment. All of that was removed for the U.S. release directed by Terry Morse. It was replaced with bad dubbing and tedious added footage starring Raymond Burr. The resulting edit was just another monster movie, but was still popular enough to assure future Toho Studios monster films a wide American release. It was the first of many kaiju films released in Japan and the first that paved the way and set the standards for future Kaiju films, many of which also feature Godzilla.

The ninth in Toho Studios’ Godzilla series, it was directed by Ishiro Honda with special effects by Eiji Tsuburaya and Sadamasa Arikawa. This is the fifth film to feature Mothra, third to feature King Ghidorah, fourth to feature Rodan, and second to feature Gorosaurus, Anguirus, Kumonga, Manda, Minilla, Baragon, and Varan. From their lunar outpost, alien forces (the Kilaaks) wreak havoc by simultaneously setting free all the monsters of yore, from Godzilla to Ghidrah. Only the United Nations Starship Moonlight SY3 can save the citizens of Earth from utter chaos and imminent trampling. Godzilla attacks New York City, Rodan invades Moscow, Mothra lays waste to Beijing, Gorosaurus destroys Paris, and Manda attacks London, which is set in to motion to take attention away from Japan, so the aliens can establish an underground stronghold near Mt. Fuji in Japan. The Kilaaks then turn their next major attack on Tokyo, and without serious opposition, become arrogant in their aims, until the UNSC discover the Kilaaks have switched to broadcasting the control signals from their base under the Moon’s surface. In a desperate battle, the crew of the SY-3 destroy the Kilaak’s lunar outpost and return the alien control system to Earth as the battle with the monsters continues… Filmed in Nikkatsu Scope.

Heyoka AKA Andrei Olenev is a cosmic auditory scientist found in the Bay Area noosphere, who has been blowing minds with his sonic manipulations. Muti Music first released Heyoka’s “Space Case EP” in 2008 and included him on their growing roster of talented artists. His albums ‘Whomp Gland & Pineal Dub’, ‘Gate Code’ and the all new ‘Marklar’ album in 2010 have shown that he is a producer consistently evolving his musical style while managing to maintain a signature sound that is distinctively ‘Heyoka’. His early influences in Downtempo, Dub and IDM combined with midtempo dancefloor genres have helped create a very unique sound that combines relentless basslines, hip hop rhythms, dub vibes, and musicality and melody, all within an atmosphere of heavy psychedelia and alien dimensions. The response to his emergence so far has been overwhelming with Heyoka developing audiences and playing festivals from US to Canada and Australia. R/D gained widespread notoriety with his 2010 remix of Fever Ray’s ‘I’m Not Done’ – which reached #2 on Hype Machine with an unprecedented 27,000 listens in just 3 days. The title track from his ‘Face Of God EP’ again landed him in the top 3 on Hype Machine’s Twitter charts.
