The investigation of the bombing case is winding along slowly, with the federal court ordering the FBI to turn over evidence and in particular, bomb remnants, to an independent laboratory to discern whether DNA, fingerprints or other forensic evidence can assist in identifying the bomber. The bomb in Judi Bari’s car exploded in a way that might not leave tell-tale signs of the bomber behind. However, there is a second bombing, allegedly by the same bomber, in which the bomb barely went off, leaving a trove of evidence, including about six feet of duct tape holding the bomb together, which might contain identifying marks. It is believed that the bomb was made by the same person because an anonymous letter from “The Lord’s Avenger” took credit for both bombs, describing them accurately in detail.
Meanwhile, the movie is winning awards, including the nationally prestigious Golden Eagle Award given by CINE. It has also won Best Documentary prize from the Santa Cruz and the Desert Rocks Film Festivals, as well as Best Feature from the Davis Film Festival. The movie has also been shown by the Santa Rosa Film Festival, the Connecticut Film Festival, the DC Independent Film Festival, the Mendocino Film Festival and quite a few others.
There are currently three contractual offers on the table for distribution in the educational and digital download arenas, though producer Cherney is waiting to find a way to distribute theatrically before going to DVD or digital. “A movie is meant to be seen in a theater on a big screen,” he said, “but the clamoring for copies has created a lot of pressure for us to get it out there any way we can. We’re giving it 3 more months before we mass produce it.”
Mary Liz Thomson, a long time associate of Cherney’s and a resident of Los Angeles, directs the movie. Information on the film’s progress can be found at either http://whobombedjudibari.com/ or its Facebook page: Who Bombed Judi Bari? The shows are co-sponsored by the Mateel Community Center, Environmentally Sound Promotions and Hokey Pokey Productions.
