For their 1-year anniversary, the resident movie geeks at La Dolce Video are bringing two hard-to-find cult gems to the big screen: 1991’s RUBIN & ED, starring Crispin Glover, and 2000’s THE BEAVER TRILOGY, starring Crispin Glover and Sean Penn. Both come from legendary underground filmmaker Trent Harris. There will also be live music from local gypsy souls Bandemonium, hula-hoop dancers, a movie trivia contest, prizes, and a special MC to deliver bad stand-up comedian one-liners.
“Of all the films that have been or ever will be, nothing compares to BEAVER TRILOGY” — Sundance Film Festival.
Beaver Trilogy was recently featured on the NPR program “This American Life,” and won a 2001 Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award. It begins as a short 1979 documentary about a young man from Utah known as Groovin’ Gary. Gary dreams of stardom while perfecting his impression of Olivia Newton-John, helped along by the make-up artistry of the local mortician. The second piece in this trilogy is a dramatic re-creation of the first, starring a young (Spicoli era) Sean Penn, shot in 1981 with a budget of just $100. The third piece, shot in 1985 with Crispin Glover, expands the story with more subplots and Hollywood flair.
“More psychedelic fun than a barrel of monkeys on mushrooms!’ — Details Magazine on RUBIN & ED
RUBIN & ED has been described as “the perfect left-field comedy about two Republicans trying to bury a dead cat.” Crispin Glover plays Rubin, a cat-loving shut-in whose mother decides it’s time for him to make a human friend. Howard Hesseman is Ed, the man who befriends Rubin, in order to fulfill his quota of recruits at a get-rich-quick seminar. Somehow, they end up lost in the desert… (Crispin Glover’s wigged, platform-heel wearing character may be recognized from his infamous David Letterman interview, in which he nearly high-kicked Letterman in the head before being thrown off the show.)
Bandemonium is a community driven music ensemble based in Humboldt county. Led by world music composer and researcher, Gregg Moore, the band offers an utterly original sound inspired by music from around the globe. an ensemble of diverse age, backgrounds and skill sets make for a unique pairing of theatrics and soul, and have made Bandemonium a crowd favorite since it’s inception in 2005. The group offers everything from folk to klezmer to anti-war and galician bagpipe music. They are a champion of community involvement and a leading supporter of local charities working regularly with such organizations as circus remedy, Tri-Counties Independent Living, Serenity Inn and Emma Center among many others.
This is an All Ages event, and both films are rated PG-13. Doors will open at 7 PM, with live music and cult movie trailers. “Rubin & Ed” will start at 8, with an intermission and movie trivia afterwards. “The Beaver Trilogy” will start at approximately 10 PM. Tickets are $5 at Arcata Theatre Lounge. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see these films on the big screen!
